Biography



Nicolae Sulac (1936, – 2003) was a famous Moldovan singer of traditional music.

He was born on September 9, 1936 in the village of Sadîc, (Romania at the time, Republic of Moldova today). His artistic career began in 1959, in the Doina church choir where he stood out for his voice. In 1965 he became the singer of the ensemble "Fluieraș", which had great success popularizing Moldovan folk music, while in the 1970s and early 1980s he appeared as the singer of the ensemble "Lăutarii".

Nikolay Sulak was a laureate of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), later of the Republic of Moldova, and was awarded the Order of the Republic (1992). In 2002 he established a fund to support popular music.

He died in the capital of Moldova, Chisinau, on April 8, 2003, after a stroke.
