Compay Segundo, real name Maximo Francisco Repilado Munios Telles (1907 - 2003), was a Cuban guitarist, singer and composer with worldwide appeal.

He was born in Siboni, Cuba, on November 18, 1907, he moved with his family to Santiago de Cuba at the age of nine. He made his debut in the Municipal Band of his city and from 1934 he lived in Havana, where he began playing the clarinet. He also learned to play guitar and tres (Cuban guitar). In 1947 he formed with Lorenzo Jerezuelo the duo Los Compadres, with which he enjoyed great success.

Greater and international fame came later, in 1997, with the release of the album Buena Vista Social Club, a highly successful recording that won several Grammy Awards.

Segundo's most famous composition is "Chan Chan", the opening track of the album Buena Vista Social Club. Other compositions that were very successful are "Sarandonga", "La calabaza", "Hey caramba", "Macusa", "Saludo Compay".

At 90 he was still singing and playing the guitar, he claimed he would live to be 115. He died of kidney failure in Havana on July 14, 2003.
