Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi (1952 - 2019) was a world famous musician from Zimbabwe, also a human rights activist and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for South Africa. He was born on September 22, 1952 in Highfield, a slum in Salisbury (now Harare) in Zimbabwe, then called Rhodesia. He started playing music in 1977 when he joined the Wagon Wheels band, they were given the opportunity to perform at the only nightclub available to blacks under Rhodesia's segregation policy. Soon they started recording their songs and making hits. With his distinctive voice, Mtukudzi became the most recognizable voice from Zimbabwe and won loyal fans all over Africa. He incorporated elements from different musical traditions, giving his music a distinct style known to fans as Tuku Music. Prior to Zimbabwe's independence, Mtukudzi's music portrayed the struggles of Rhodesia's white minority. In the years following Zimbabwe's independence, his music promoted tolerance and peace, and he often defended the rights of women and children. Mtukudzi was the father of five children, two of his children became musicians too, one of his sons died in a car accident in 2010. On January 23, 2019, Mtukudzi died at the Avenues Clinic in Harare, Zimbabwe after a long battle with diabetes. |
