Mory Kanté (1950 - 2020) was a Guinean singer, and harp player, one of the most popular and successful African musicians. He was born near Kishidugu, Guinea on March 29, 1950. His family had a rich musical tradition, his mother was a singer of traditional songs. The family originated from Guinea and Mali. He was sent to Mali at the age of 7, where he learned to play the harp. In 1971 he became a member of the band Rail Band, in which from 1973 he became the lead singer. In 1987, he released the song "Yé ké yé ké", which became one of the biggest hits in Africa and number one in 1988 in Europe. He soon became one of the top musicians in Africa. On October 16, 2001, Kante was appointed Goodwill Ambassador to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). In 2021, along with other famous musicians, he participated in the recording of "Africa Stop Ebola", a song to raise awareness in the aftermath of the Ebola crisis. The song sold more than 250,000 copies with all proceeds going to Médecins Sans Frontières.

Kante died on May 22, 2020, at a hospital in Conakry. He suffered from chronic diseases in the last years of his life and was often treated in France. In 2020 and due to the coronavirus epidemic he had not managed to go to France
