Goran Bregović is a world-famous Bosnian composer of Serbo-Croatian descent, whose music is a mixture of rock, gypsy and traditional Balkan music.

He was born in the multi-ethnic Sarajevo of then-Yugoslavia on March 22, 1950, to a Croatian father and a Serbian mother. He considers himself a Yugoslav. His father was in the military. His parents divorced when he was a small child, he lived and grew up with his mother in his hometown.

From an early age, Bregovic was involved in music, he started by learning the violin. He had to change music schools several times, many of his teachers did not see any talent in him. As a teenager, he asked his mother to enroll him in a music academy, but she prevented him. A few years later, his mother had to move to the Adriatic coast and he, still a teenager, had to survive on his own, playing music in bars and doing various other jobs.

His music career began at the age of 16, as the bassist of a rock band, in the following years he will join a number of different bands, in 1974 he founded "Bijelo Dugme" ("White Button"), one of its most popular and influential bands in Yugoslavia until their dissolution in 1988.

He will become world famous after his collaboration with his compatriot director Emir Koustouritsa. He wrote the music for Koustouritsa's films "The Time of the Gypsies" (1988), "Arizona Dream" (1993) and "Underground" (1995). The soundtracks of the films "Queen Margo" (1994), "A Thousand and One Recipes by a Cook in Love" (1996) and "The Kiss of the Reptile" (1997) stand out from the rest of his music for the cinema. The albums "P.S." stand out from his personal works. (1996), "Silence of the Balkans" (1998) and "Ederlezi" (1999).

Goran Bregovic is married and has 4 daughters; he is living in Belgrade, Paris and Sarajevo.
