Peter Allen (1944 – 1992) was an Australian singer-songwriter, musician and entertainer. In addition to recording several albums, he had a very successful career in cabaret and concerts. His patriotic song "I Still Call Australia Home", has been used extensively in advertising campaigns and was added to the National Film and Sound Archive's Sounds of Australia register in 2013. Peter Allen was born Peter Richard Woolnough on February 10, 1944, in Tenterfield, New South Wales, a small country town in Australia. From an early age he was taught piano and dance and by the age of 11 he was playing the piano in the drawing room of the New England Hotel in Armidale. His father became an alcoholic with violent outbursts after returning from World War II, and in November 1958, he shot himself. Shortly after his father's suicide, Allen left school and moved to Lismore with his mother and sister to live with relatives. In 1959, Allen went to Surfers Paradise to look for work and met Chris Bell, an English-born singer-guitarist, with whom he formed a singing duo called the Allen Brothers. Within a year, they were in Sydney performing on the Australian music TV show Bandstand. In 1964, Judy Garland's husband discovered the Allen Brothers while they were playing in Hong Kong. He hired them to open for Judy Garland when she toured. Fascinated by Allen, Judy introduced him to her daughter, Liza Minnelli whom he married in 1967 and divorced in 1970. The same year the duo of the Allen brothers broke up and he began recording solo. Throughout his career he achieved more success through his songs recorded by others. He remained best known for his commanding stage presence, the boundless energy he brought to their performances and his luxurious costumes. In 1976, Allen released an album titled Taught by Experts, which reached number one in Australia. After Liza Minnelli, Allen was in a relationship with Gregory Connell, with whom they lived together until Connell's death from AIDS in 1984. And Allen died of AIDS eight years later, on June 18, 1992. |
