Historical Context
Political, social and cultural background during the life of Lessing Doris.

Lessing grew up in Southern Rhodesia, a British colony whose settler society was shaped by racial hierarchy and unequal power. In Britain after the Second World War, political debate was increasingly influenced by the Cold War, while older expectations about women’s roles were being challenged. These forces formed part of the world she observed and wrote about. Her experiences in colonial Africa and her involvement in left-wing politics gave her a particular vantage point from which to question both racial injustice and political orthodoxy.
