Kebede Ashenafi

Ashenafi Kebede grew up during the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie I, a period in which Ethiopia was undergoing significant political, educational and cultural change. Modern schools and institutions were developing alongside older religious and artistic traditions, while the country sought to strengthen its cultural identity after the Italian occupation of 1936–1941.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Ethiopia expanded its modern educational system and developed new cultural institutions. Music education became part of this modernization, and the establishment of the Yared School of Music created an important center for the formal study of both Ethiopian and Western musical traditions.

Kebede belonged to a generation of Ethiopian intellectuals who studied abroad and later attempted to combine international academic methods with the study of their own cultural heritage. His years in the United States exposed him to Western classical music and the emerging academic discipline of ethnomusicology.

The Ethiopian Revolution of 1974 ended the monarchy of Haile Selassie and brought the military Derg regime to power. The political transformation profoundly affected Ethiopian intellectual and cultural life. Kebede subsequently settled permanently in the United States, where his academic career increasingly connected Ethiopian music with the broader study of African and African-American culture.

His life therefore spanned two important cultural worlds: the modernization of twentieth-century Ethiopia and the growing international academic interest in African musical traditions.
