Historical Context
Political, social and cultural background during the life of Kazantzakis Nikos.

Kazantzakis’s life was shaped by the struggle for Cretan freedom and by the political and social upheavals of the early twentieth century. He was born in Ottoman-ruled Crete, experienced the island’s revolutionary years as a child, and later witnessed war, revolution, mass displacement and ideological conflict across Europe. These events, together with his travels and encounters with different cultures, informed his writing about freedom, identity, faith and the individual’s struggle against limits imposed by history and society.
