Maria Callas grew up during a period of profound political and cultural upheaval. Born in New York to Greek immigrant parents in 1923, she moved to Athens in 1937 as Europe was moving toward the Second World War.
Her formative years as a singer coincided with the authoritarian Metaxas regime, the outbreak of war and the Axis occupation of Greece. Athens suffered severe food shortages, political violence and economic hardship. Despite these conditions, Callas continued her musical training and began performing professionally with the newly established Greek National Opera.
After the war, Italy became one of the most important centers of her career. Italian opera houses were rebuilding their cultural life while audiences were rediscovering both the standard nineteenth-century repertory and works that had fallen out of regular performance.
During the 1950s, opera itself was being transformed by new ideas about theatrical realism, stage direction and recorded sound. Long-playing records, radio broadcasts and international touring allowed singers to reach audiences far beyond the opera house. Callas became one of the first opera singers whose fame extended deeply into international mass culture.
At the same time, the bel canto repertory of Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini was undergoing a major reassessment.
