Biography

Guru Nanak Dev (15 April 1469 – 22 September 1539), also known as Baba Nanak, was the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. He was born at Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, now Nankana Sahib in present-day Pakistan, into a Hindu family. From an early age he showed a strong interest in spiritual questions and came into contact with both Hindu and Muslim traditions. As a young man he worked as a storekeeper at Sultanpur Lodhi. He married Mata Sulakhni and had two sons, Sri Chand and Lakhmi Das. Sikh tradition relates that while living at Sultanpur he underwent a profound spiritual experience near the Bein River, after which he began to devote his life to teaching and spiritual exploration.
