Biography
Camilo Mori (1896–1973) was a Chilean painter and an important figure in his country’s modern art. Born on September 24, 1896, in Valparaíso, he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Santiago. In 1920, he travelled to Europe, where he encountered avant-garde movements and was particularly influenced by Paul Cézanne.He participated in the Montparnasse Group, which helped renew Chilean painting. His portraits, landscapes and still lifes explored styles ranging from Expressionism to abstraction. He also designed posters and taught for decades at the University of Chile. In 1950, he received the National Art Prize for painting. He died on December 7, 1973.
