The children of AdamRead the full poem Saadi · The Children of Adam
are the limbs of a single body,
all sharing the same origin.
When one limb
endures pain and suffering,
the others cannot remain at peace.
If you feel no sorrow
for the suffering of another,
you are unworthy
of being called human.

OUT of me unworthy and unknownRead the full poem Masters Edgar · ANNE RUTLEDGE
The vibrations of deathless music;
“With malice toward none, with charity for all.”
Out of me the forgiveness
of millions toward millions,
And the beneficent face of a nation
Shining with justice and truth.
I am Anne Rutledge who sleep
beneath these weeds,
Beloved in life of Abraham Lincoln,
Wedded to him, not through union,
But through separation.
Bloom forever, O Republic,
From the dust of my bosom!
DEACON TAYLOR
I BELONGED to the church,
And to the party of prohibition;
And the villagers thought
I died of eating watermelon.

For every noon for thirty years,
I slipped behind the prescription partition
In Trainor’s drug store
And poured a generous drink
From the bottle marked
”Spiritus frumenti.”

Whom dost thou worship in this lonely dark corner of a temple with doors all shut?
Open thine eyes and see thy God is not before thee!
He is there where the tiller is tilling the hard ground and where the pathmaker is breaking stones.
He is with them in sun and in shower, and his garment is covered with dust.
Put off thy holy mantle and even like him come down on the dusty soil!
