Ahmed Shawqiv, was an Egyptian poet with a major contribution to the development of Arabic poetry, was named prince of poets in recognition of his important contribution to literature.

He was born on October 17, 1870 in Cairo to a wealthy family with Turkish, Arabic, Kurdish and Greek roots and initially received a degree in translation and worked for a year in the court of Abbas Hilmi Pasha in Egypt. Then he went to France and began studying law; while there he came in contact with the work of French poets and playwrights and began to write poems and plays.

He returned to Egypt in 1894 and soon became a prominent member of Arab literary culture, writing poetry and plays. In 1914 the British forced him into exile in southern Spain. He remained in Andalusia for 6 years. At that time, his sense of nostalgia and sense of alienation led him to write patriotic poems about Egypt and the Arab world; when he returned, he studied the history of Ancient Egypt and Islam and wrote many religious poems. The maturity of his poetic style was reflected in his plays, as after his exile he wrote his most remarkable works.

He died in Cairo in 1932.
