Nino Rota (Giovanni "Nino" Rota Rinaldi, 1911 - 1979) was an Italian composer best known for the cinematic music he wrote.

He was born on December 3, 1911 in Milan, to a family of musicians, and from an early age began studying music at the city conservatory; when he graduated, he continued his studies for 3 years in Philadelphia, United States. For first time he wrote music for a film in 1933, but it was the acquaintance with Federico Fellini that changed his life, as he wrote the music for manhy of his movies.

He wrote music for more than 100 films, such as "La Stranda", "Sweet Life", "8 1/2", "Waterloo", "Romeo and Juliet", "The Godfather" and others. He also wrote music for operaws, ballet and symphonies. In 1975 he was honored with an Oscar for his music for The Godfather 2.



Rota had a daughter from his relationship with Italian pianist Magda Longari; he died in Rome on April 10, 1979, of coronary heart disease.
