History of Bhutan




Karma Phuntsho is a Bhutanese writer and columnist specializing in Buddhism and Eastern religions. He was born in 1968 in the village of Ura, in the Bumthang district of central Bhutan, he was the third child in his family. He went to the third grade of primary school in his village and was forced to repeat it as there was no fourth grade there. The following year he moved with friends to a nearby town to continue school. In 1986 he became a monk in order to study Buddhism and continued his studies in religions and Sanskrit in India. In 1997 he went to Oxford where he graduated with a PhD in Buddhist Studies.

He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the CNRS in Paris and as a research associate in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge. He returned to his home country where he founded the Loden Foundation, a charity dedicated to promoting education and entrepreneurship, and the Shejun Service for Cultural Documentation and Research in Bhutan.

Puncho has published a number of works, including eight books, translations, book reviews and articles on Buddhism, Bhutan and Tibetan Studies. His book "The History of Bhutan" is the first book to offer a comprehensive history of Bhutan in English and received the Outstanding Academic Degree Award in 2015.
