Gwendoline Konie (1938 - 2009) was a Zambian poet, diplomat, and politician who fought for women's rights and against racism.
She was born on October 9, 1938 in Lusaka in then-occupied by Britain Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia. She studied at Cardiff University in Wales, then at the American University in Washington and received his PhD in Sociology from the University of Warwick. In 1962, she was elected by the Governor-General of Northern Rhodesia, to become a member of the Legislative Council. Two years later, in 1964, the country gained its independence from Britain and Connie played a role in rebuilding independent Zambia. She served as Zambia's ambassador to Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland from 1974 to 1977, and from 1977 was the country's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. In 1979 she became Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism of Zambia. In 2001, she ran for president in Zambia's general election with the Social Democratic Party, which she had formed in August 2000. Connie wrote many poems in which she negotiated the same issues for which she was fighting: the need for women's emancipation, the need for modernization of society and for proper education for all. She died at MKP Trust Hospital in Lusaka on March 14, 2009. |
