Kalidasa (c. 380-450) was an Indian poet and playwright, a representative of the golden age of Indian literature. We know almost nothing about his life as Sanskrit literature was impersonal and provided no information about the authors.

His name is associated with many legends, including that he was known for his great beauty that attracted a princess who wanted to marry him. It is said that he did not have access to formal education but he was very intelligent and self-taught.

Of Kalindasa's plays, only three have survived to date, the most important and mature being Shakuntala. It is a romantic play in five acts, which narrates the love of a king of India who seduces the stepdaughter of a wise hermit, he is forced to abandon her due to a curse, later overcomes the curse and reunites with his wife and son.

Kalindasa is considered one of the greatest Indian writers, he is known as the "Shakespeare of India".
