Biography
Feim Ibrahimi (1935–1997) was an Albanian composer who achieved international recognition. Born on October 20, 1935 in Argyrokastro, southern Albania, he was essentially self-taught until the age of 27, when he entered the newly founded Tirana Conservatory to study composition. He then taught composition, counterpoint and harmony at the conservatory (1966–73); he also became deputy director at the higher Institute of Arts (1973–77), music secretary of the Union of Albanian Writers and Artists (1977–91), director of the Opera and Ballet Theater in Tirana (1991–92). From 1992 until his death he taught theory and composition at the Tirana Conservatory.
As secretary of music during the period of cultural isolation of Albania, Ibrahimi during his official trips abroad tried, as much as possible, to follow international musical developments. After the collapse of the communist regime he worked tirelessly to bring Albanian music to the wider European music scene. He has won several awards in national competitions as well as two Democracy Awards – the most important prize in the field of creative activity,
Ibrahimi's music covers almost all genres: soundtracks, chamber music, concertos for solo instruments and orchestra, symphonies, ballets and vocal works. The dialogue for cello and piano and the romance "E la tua veste è bianca" for soprano, cello and piano (both composed in June 1997) are the last works of the composer, who died in August 2, 1997 in Turin, Italy.
