Sonnet to All Prisoners for the Same Cause
Speech and fellowship are denied to you,
and even your defense, chosen spirits;
because only the virtue within your hearts
restrains and binds the tyrant’s pride.
And if a higher purpose bends you toward charity,
your scattered bodies and united minds
shall be blessed, as was the Cross,
the gallows, the fire, the hooks and the saw!
It is the noble death that makes men divine,
where only wise and manly courage
unfolds the great trophies of its glory.
Here the gentle soul finds sweet freedom,
and discovers the truth that, without her,
even Paradise itself would be vile.
