Review of Epitaph
It is one of the last poems he wrote, composed near the end of his life, and it carries the atmosphere of a personal farewell. The themes of solitude, concealment, social masks, and the feeling of living as an outsider reflect experiences that marked much of Cocteau's life and work. The final line—
"Without ever having lived, I die."
—is often regarded as one of his most poignant and revealing poetic statements, expressing a sense of estrangement and incompleteness that haunted many of his writings in his final years.
